I am on to some new travels away from the island but my heart will remain for sure. I will be back and I will always love Galveston Island. The place I made my first sand castle, first learned to swim, my first sting by a jellyfish, and the place I came back to as an adult. I have lived here for six years now and have planted my feet firmly in the sand since I was a tiny little sea urchin. I plan that I will spend many of my older days here and perhaps even settle to rest eventually.
Until then, I will share my island life and it’s many amazing moments.
After all the food talk I’ve been writing about, it’s time to think about how one visit’s or live’s on the island and keeps fit and this one was a very easy round up for your benefit, not even half of the option’s are truly listed here:
Soulfully calming, located in the Down Town area and around the corner from a fantastic Juice Bar we will start with YogaHaven, lead by some incredibly well trained souls who live eat and breath the healthy life and can cater from the first time goers to the most advanced. If you are visiting and want a true taste of the island, it’s local’s, and how we live…head here.
There is the big lofty space I LOVE to spend my time in at The BodySpace, which also offer’s more than just yoga with pilates, ballet for adult’s, and more. Again with people who live the life if you want a real good work out that teaches you how to properly move your body and where at the end you love your instructor who through out you may have cursed at a little this is the place to go. In good weather the high up airy sunshine filled loft with it’s windows open and the sound of seagulls will put you into island living real quick.
There is a new HOT Yoga location open Down Town so keep an eye out for our ever expanding yoga scene and get your flex on.
Urban Fitness is a quaint little Gym Smack in the middle of Down town and you can pay by the day so no need for a membership if visiting. If you want indoor machine work then this is the spot.
CrossFit Tidal Wave has expanded so well over the past few years that they have had to move to bigger location’s twice now! This is also a place to learn what the local’s do and if you are in need of some serious sweat and workout with an entire kick of fun then head on there for sure.
Anaconda Jiu Jitsu. If you are more for contact training, self defence training, experienced….or not at all experienced but want something new and challenging this is a cool can place to go from the white belts to the black belts there is a place for you and they offer classes for men, women, and children too. Get your grip on.
Now if you want some fun out door beach life time but you also want to feel a little calorie and muscle burn then here are some great options for you….it’s so much like playing that you’ll forget there’s a work out involved!
Kayak with the Artist Boat. Here you will have local island adventure, learn about our wildlife and get that work out in easily and enjoyably.
Paddle Boarding, this has been a much newer addition to the island but it’s not going to leave anytime…ever. This let’s you see a beautiful view from a different angle (even more so if you try yoga paddle board), meet other folks, get a fantastic work out and be one with the water…truly some island living.
Surf lessons. Here is another way to enjoy island life. Now I have surfed all over the world and a lot of people “dis” the Galveston surf waves but let me tell you if you can surf here you can surf anywhere. Not to mention again meeting the local’s and knowing how we do it. What did you do this summer? Learned to surf, baby!
Bike Riding. You can rent bike’s and ride on the seawall and even Down Town and the Strand or wiz through the neighborhoods to enjoy the Victorian architecture, checking the island out and avoiding the driving or walking, and for sure the parking, even making fun stops for treat’s and drink’s along the way.
Like I said, this doesn’t cover half of the fun work out options available on the island but feel free to share your favorite’s with us!
